WFMU

WFMU

This radio station has been a huge part of my life since I was about 16. If you are not familier I highly recommend it especially during their marathon as they will throw out some of the best couple of weeks of broadcasting. I know it's hard to part with ones money but if you like what you hear the could always use the support. When they say 100% listener supported they do mean it.

Here is one of the things in the news lately that actually made me really really angry.

Albatross!

Pleasant surprise my local PBS station is showing the Monty Python's personal best. I know this stuff is getting released on DVD as well. If nothing else definitely worth making it's way on to your Netflix queue.

Movie Review
*Made*
I love Jon Favreau he is one of those guys that along with Kevin Smith and Quentin Tarantino absolutely loves film. This unfortunately does not make up for the fact that Made is to me just a bad movie and I blame it all on one factor Vince Vaughn. Watching this movie has caused me to finally come to the conclusion that I have tried to avoid for some time but that is when it comes to Vince I just don't get it. He just doesn't do it for me.
The basic concept of the movie is that after doing some "legit" work for crime boss (Peter Falk)John is "forced" to partake in some illicit practices to pay off a debt. When offered with the opportunity John brings his life long friend and aspiring good fella Vince along for the ride. Vinces overzealousness and inability to keep his mouth shut in turn gets them in to some zany trouble on their trip to NY. Watching John in this movie is like being out with two friends and one of them is obviously an embarrassment to the other. I got that same kind of uncomfortable feeling for Jon making it almost difficut to make it through the whole movie this I imagine is intentional but I think you are supposed to laugh at it. The problem is I don't have this feeling for Bobby (Jon's character) I actually have it for Jon. Feeling like he is bringing along his acting buddy on this ride. There is a good script there and I honestly could have seen this movie work with someone else in Vince's part maybe Jay Mohr but I really only chuckled maybe twice through the film. As I will say many times may be it was just me.

I have always had a weird thing for urban and industrial landscape which made the discovery of Rob Dobi's work in a random issue of Wonka Vision a pleasant surprise. Check out New England Ruins.

As I've said a few times I have come across so many cool blogs lately. One of my favorites and if you are into Psych, ProtoPunk, Fuzz and dare I say garage rock will probably become one of your favorites too is Chocreve. The Freakbeat finds have put on hell of a smile on my face.

Eat Pes

I am extremely impatient when it comes to watching video on line. But I found the link to this site through WFMU's Blog with in watching one short I was hooked. Pes's stop motion is class A. His surrealist touches are a treat to the eye but obviously as you will be able tell by the videos themselves then also by watching the making of's that are on the site does not take him self completely serious. Wait until you have about 40 minutes to spare and head on over to Eat Pes and spend some time going through.

It is a sad time that I once again have to post Rest In Peace here again. This time to Johnny Grundge One of the man that with his partner Rocco Rock(who also passed to soon)as the team of Public Enemy helped recreate and bring the revitalization of the wrestling industry in the 1990's in the ECW Revolution. He is one of the small group that can be classified as the core of the initial coming of ECW and as one of it's first true stars. Very little info is out at this time.

Thrills! Excitement! Death Defying Blogs!

Ok let me say this off the bat as I know it is not a very popular opinion to have. I am a fan of Sky Captain. I thought it was a great movie. I'm not going to defend my stance as I don't feel I have to. I personally happen to love the movie. That being said when I started to read about this next mention the Cap was the first thing that came into my mind. Seems the boys (and girls) over at Dark Horse Indie have gotten their hands into a little movie called Monarch of the Moon. The general story seems to that this is a WWII propaganda film disguised as an old school multi part Saturday Matinee serial. Not sure who came up with it but the faux back story they have to go along with the movie is a kick. The movie will make it debut at the upcoming NY Comic-Con. Not sure if it is direct to video or a limited release at that point. This one completely flew under my radar.

Oh what a twisted fate Mathmagic has spun.

Here is the blog for Amanda and Michelle two artists that work under the name of the girls. They do some wonderful interpretations of very familiar charters with a great style that I have loved since childhood and thinking about it (hence the silly reference in title)can most likely be traced back to my days in the 2nd or 3rd grade when the projector was rolled out and we would get to watch educational Disney films. I would eventually discover this art work incorporated into much of album cover art particularly Jazz covers hence the reason it has become known to me as the Jazz style.

I have been sucked into a world of blogs that seems to have gone on for a bit of time that I missed out on. It's a sub set of people that are sharing the treasures that they have reaped from their pop culture twisted brains. I have been exposed to more things including new artists/animators, music, comics and god knows what else. I'm going to start throwing that stuff here and hopefully sharing some of what I can dig out of my years of crap that I always wondered what the hell I could do with it.

Hoax breeds Hoax

I Saw NY

A great story from one of my favorite sites Snopes

2.08.2006

** New Line options for both a prequel to the Nightmare on Elm St. Franchise and also the Freddy vs. Jason vs. M. Myers. Um I really don't know what to say. Just felt the urge to make mention of it.

**Seems that Clive Barkers thief of Always film version may finally see the light of day with Shrek 2 co-director Kelly Asbury at the helm. It will be live action (although I thought I remember hearing of an animated version some years ago). I haven't read this book in some time but I do remember enjoying it and thinking it had a very visual element to it so it will hopefully be worth waiting for.

Here is the first in my mention of one of my illnesses. Budget DVD. While the major companies out there much like cd have decided to over inflate prices and make as much of a buck off them as possible. There are more and more fly by night companies picking up on public domain and cheap license movies and putting them out to be found at your local dollar store and Wal-Mart like establishment.
**Wild Guitar/The Beatniks double feature (Price 1.00)
Wild Guitar- is the typical boy goes to Hollywood to be a singing star. Boy meets girl. Boy hooks up with girl. Boy hooks up with crooked manager. Boy gets even with manager. And boy was the ending a bit of a shock. The movie was directed by Ray Dennis Steckler who would go on to direct The Incredibly Strange Creatures Who Stopped Living and Became Mixed-Up Zombies!!? As well as enough exploitation and porn to keep Something Weird Video in business for 30 or so years. Look for the dance numbers of Carolyn Brandt (Steckler's wife) and if nothing else the movie is worth its weight for incidental music. You will get good chuckle out of the movie and believe me there is the attempt to try here.
The Beatniks- Although falling with in the world of crap it is not again for lack of trying. I know most people might say I am to kind but really it seems like they where trying here. The story is that of a young man who leads a group of thugs (ne beatniks). The guy is heard singing by a passing through agent while singing to the jukebox. The agent offers the young man the chance of a life time. In turn a pot full of crabs story line ensues with the gang trying to keep our hero from succeeding and bettering himself. Again another bit of a swerve ending. Look for the incredibly over the top but still entertaining performance of Peter Breck as Moon the second in command. Although I can not be sure of it I would almost venture to say that Crispin Glover used this part as preparation for Layne in the River's Edge. Both these movies have the distinction of making an appearance on Mystery Science Theater 3000

A very funny post from the Film Threat Blog.

An Open letter to Steve Martin
Dear Steve,
We here at team Film Threat had a lengthy discussion about you. We’ve decided that your recent flood of horrible movies have just about outweighed all your good movies and appearances from the past. Of course the straw that broke King-Tuts back is the soon to be released remake of “The Pink Panther.” We’ll spare you the “dude, what were you thinking” speel (although dude, seriously…what were you thinking?) runaround and get right to our point. We demand you start making better movies or else we’re taking our complaints to the studio heads and demanding action. What action, you say?
We’re going to ask that studios start remaking all of your best movies with comedy stars of today. First off, we’ll remake “The Jerk” starring Johnny Knoxville. Maybe then you’ll know what it feels like to take a truly great comedy film and ruin it all for the sake of a few bucks. Next, we’re pitching back to back remakes of “Pennies From Heaven” and “Dead Men Don’t Wear Plaid” starring Wayne Brady. He’s been a lil lean on the hits lately and he can sing and dance and he’s oh-so-funny. Not nearly as funny as you in a black moustache speaking Sellers-esque French, but funny nonetheless.
Since you seem to be so big on sequels like the ear blood inducing “Cheaper By the Dozen 2” and “Father of the Bride 2,” we’ve decided to make a sequel to the “Three Amigos!” This will be called “Los Cheaper Amigos” and will star Rob Schneider, Adam Sandler and Bob Saget. Hey, those guys can make money at the box office and as you well know, that’s what it’s all about. We’re also toying with the idea of a “Trains, Planes and Automobiles” sequel called “Choppers, Rickshaws and Scions” starring Jimmy Fallon and Horatio Sanz. Maybe you could loan us some of that fat cash you made off “Sgt. Bilko” to get this ball rolling? Other ideas include a remake of “Roxanne” starring Jon Heder and the eloquent David Spade, “Dirty Rotten Scoundrels 2” starring Owen Wilson and Colin Quinn and “L.A. Story” with the irrepressible Pauly Shore.
We do this all because we love you and can’t stand to see what you’re becoming. Hey, we understand you have other passions such as writing books and plays, collecting art and picking the banjo and these box office babies fill the bank account for those endeavors. But come on Steve, you were once the best and now you’re sullying that past with crap after trite crap after stupid crap. At least Chevy Chase and Dan Aykroyd saw the writing on the wall and bowed out somewhat gracefully. Please stop or we’ll be forced to take matters into our own hands. How does a “Grand Canyon” remake with Martin Lawrence, Corey Feldman, Kevin Costner and Vin Diesel sound? We could go on…
So think about it, Steve. What are you leaving us old-school fans with? What about the new generation? They’re going to end up hating you as much as we’re starting to and then they won’t even go rent your old stuff. We wish you the best of luck and for the love of God, fire your agent!
Sincerely,Film Threat

Superman Animator Myron Waldman Dies at 97

I am a huge fan of Max Fleisher Studios animation and to say that the Superman cartoons that came out of that studio are not some of the most incredible pieces of cartoon work would be doing those masterpieces a gross injustice. So with that I have to extend my respect and tip my hat to anyone who had their hand in the creativity pool that came up with them especially someone who was a major contributor. The harsh reality of this being the possible end of a historical line is sad to say the least.
RIP Myron.

Al Lewis, grandpa on TV's "The Munsters," dies

By Jeanne King
NEW YORK (Reuters) - Al Lewis, best known for his role as Grandpa in television's "The Munsters," has died after a long illness, a local radio station said on Saturday.

A movie Web site listed his age as 95, but there have been reports that he was 83.

Lewis, who died on Friday, was born in Brooklyn and was raised by his mother, an immigrant sweatshop worker in the Brownsville district of that borough.

"Brownsville was the largest Jewish ghetto in America," he once said. "We all were very poor. But we stood together when people were evicted. When the marshals and sheriffs would leave, we'd break the lock and move the furniture back inside. Back then, we didn't let people live in the street."

Lewis worked as salesman and waiter and once owned a successful restaurant in Greenwich Village. He also was a poolroom owner, store detective and political candidate.

He worked as a circus clown and performed stunts on the trapeze bar, taught school, wrote two children's books and by the time he was 31, received a doctorate in child psychology from Columbia University.

An avid college basketball fan, he also scouted for several basketball teams.

1313 MOCKINGBIRD LANE

It wasn't until 1949 that he turned to acting and joined the Paul Mann Actor's Workshop where his classmates were Sidney Poitier and Vic Morrow. It was at the workshop that Lewis developed his comedic style.

His first big role was as Officer Leo Schnauser on the "Car 54, Where Are You?" series that ran from 1961 to 1963. In 1964, Lewis began playing Grandpa Munster, part of a wacky, endearing family of monsters whose fictional address was 1313 Mockingbird Lane in Mockingbird Heights.

"The Munsters" ran for two years on CBS, then continued on in syndication
In 1988, he accepted the Green Party nomination for governor of New York saying, "We don't inherit the world from our ancestors, we borrow it from our kids."

Although he lost to incumbent Republican Gov. George Pataki, he still managed to collect more than 52,000 votes with his name on the ballot as "Grandpa Al Lewis."

Lewis' first political work was for the Sacco and Vanzetti defense committee. Nicola Sacco and Bartolomeo Vanzetti, two Italian anarchists, were executed in Massachusetts in 1927 for a double murder and robbery amid doubts about their guilt.

Lewis worked in the 1930s to free the Scottsboro Boys -- nine black teenagers accused of raping two white women in another highly publicized case. All but one were sentenced to death, but eventually they were cleared.

"If anything I consider myself an anarchist," he once said on his weekly radio show on WBAI in New York City.

Lewis had three angioplasties, and in 2003 doctors were forced to amputate his right leg below the knee and all five toes of his left foot.

He is survived by his wife, Karen, three sons and four grandchildren.

The Day the Music Died, February 3, 1959, refers to the plane crash that killed three rock and roll singers, who were very popular at the time. Early that morning, at approximately 1:05 AM Central Standard Time Buddy Holly, Ritchie Valens, and The Big Bopper (J. P. Richardson) were killed when the plane they were on crashed en route to a gig near Fargo, North Dakota. Don McLean's 1971 song, "American Pie", contains many references to this day, including the phrase itself.

*I have found so many cool blogs with fun little treats. I'll start posting them here soon.

*Watching the second episode of Drawn together I have ever seen. Um. I really don't mean to laugh but holy crap

*Word has it with the recent Pixar/Disney deal someone is throwing around the idea of a 2d animated feature of ignores Spirit. Won't get my hopes up and hopefully be pleasantly surprised.

*Curryman and Samoa Joe are making an appearance on Comedy Central's Distracted game show.

This was a I don't have much to say right now but I really want to post post.

2.01.2006

First off I was noticing that really old post about Van Helsing down there. I was trying to be objective. Although it is most likely to late the movie is shit please don't give the studio any reason to think people like it.

*I own an insane amount of CD's. A lot of which have been purchased on various trips in the discount bins of records stores. Some of these CD's will go eons with out being listened to and maybe even eventually sold. Some of them get listened to are not bad and get put on shelf sometimes for years at a time until one day I bring it down again to see if it moves me any more then it did before. In those 1 in 100 times of a second listen I not only find that I enjoy the disc more then I do the first time but I find something that blows me away. This is usually due to not being in the right mind set for the music when I first get it or make an assumption on what I will get based on many factors cover art, word of mouth, one song I have heard etc. One of these rare gems that has come to me as of late is from the Deluxetone Rockets-Greenroom Blues. Sadly the band from what I understand no longer exists. The album is a great mix Rocka/Pschyobilly,Ol' School R&R and Cow Punk with some great dark overtones. Even when the band dips into the Tooth and Nail (the bands label) pre requisite religious fervor the songs still carry enough style to be damn good. They turn in cover of the Cure's Love Song that would make Mr. Hexum poop his hemp panties. Defiantly worth picking up.

*Through the links section of From Parts Unknown I was lucky enough to be exposed to blog for the folks at Fwak! Animation. Fwak is the team that has brought us most notably the Saturday morn extravaganza that is Mucha Lucha. I have been a fan of the show for some time but honestly was not very familiar with it's creators until finding this. The blog is an excellent source of info from great music to incredible art to all other nuggets of randomness in between strange/retro/pop culture. Also if you have interest in the Fwaks doings it is a great way to keep a breast.

Fwak! Blog

*Speaking of FPU Mr. Unknown's blog is a another cool place for find out info on general weirdness in film and in life as well as a place to follow some of the cool stuff going on the hooded wrestling world. Mr Unknown has also started another venture to touch on his other great love that being the oh so mysterious non turtle tainted Ninja mythos known as Ninja 80. Both are worth checking out.

* If you are a blog whore like myself you should sign up for Bloglines. That's all I will say. I have been waiting for something like this for a long time.

*Want some general off the wall subversion and weirdness check out WFMU's Beware of the Blog. You will get whole albums of some of the craziest stuff like Bulgarian psychedelic Metal or a whole CD devoted to songs associated with Napoleon and XIV's There Coming to Take Me Away.

Ok enough for now I will be back again soon. Had a few Ghetto Guinness' and feeling a bit on the tired side.
